Since 1988, the New Moon Coffeehouse has been providing a welcoming venue for you to relax and enjoy live musical performances by new and established singer-songwriters in the wide variety of genres and styles called "folk music".

The musical folk traditions of Canada, from the maritimes to the prairies, are beautifully shared by The Bombadils, a chamber folk duo from Montreal. They have received positive acclaim from audiences throughout North America and beyond. We are so glad now to welcome them to Haverhill.

Canadian maritimer Luke Fraser and prairie-girl Sarah Frank share a love of folk songs and fiddle tunes. Drawing from the Canadian, American, and Celtic traditions, the two pour the spirit of story-telling and kitchen parties into their own writing.

Luke brings guitar, mandolin and home-grown east coast vocals in harmony with Sarah’s singing, lyrical fiddle playing and claw-hammer banjo.

The name of the band may be a nod to Tom Bombadil, a Tolkien character (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Bombadil).

Originally from New York, now dividing his time between Buenos Aires, Argentina and New York's Hudson Valley, Richard Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be.

Although known primarily as songwriter, Shindell takes a more holistic view of his career. Producer, writer, singer, guitarist, interpreter: it all adds up to a life in music.

In the past, Richard Shindell's performances have filled our venue to its capacity. We welcome Richard Shindell back to the New Moon to the delight of his many fans old and new. Reverend Robert Jones performs Detroit blues. He is a renowned preacher, teacher, program presenter and touring bluesman.

In his more than twenty years of experience as a performer, musician, storyteller, radio producer/host and music educator, he has opened for and played with some of the finest musicians in the world.

Still, Robert considers his greatest honor to be his call to the gospel of ministry. He combines storytelling, vocals, instrumental music and artwork to explore and showcase the earliest known aspects of African American music and culture. In other words, Robert is looking to explore and share the music and stories that came before the Blues.

Hailing originally from Glen Rock, NJ (also the birthplace of the famous Vivino Brothers) Kathy, Carol, Connie and Linda Sharar are four independently successful musicians/singers, who together create upbeat performances full of sisterly entwining harmonies and instrumental eloquence. The highly acclaimed husband-wife duo, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly, present delightful programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs, a capella pieces, old-time gospel songs, dance tunes, and original works. Elwood and Aubrey blend gorgeous and unusual harmonies and play guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, bones, spoons, limberjacks, and other surprises including Appalachian clog dancing, French Canadian footwork, and Tap.

Their performance is appealing to all ages, and with humor, audience participation, and a relaxed stage presence, Aubrey and Elwood explain song origins to create a deeper understanding of the music and its cultural history.

In May we are very excited to bring you for their first performance at the New Moon an up-and-coming Boston-based folk trio called Lula Wiles. The band's debut album has received warm praise from fans of Americana and indie music. If you enjoy traditional fiddle tunes, bluegrass harmonies, classic country ballads and contemporary indie folk, Lula Wiles delivers a unique and bare-knuckled blend of these genres, rooted in rich and diverse musical heritage. Each of the three grew up in Maine in a musical family, and they have known eachother since childhood, playing together at Maine Fiddle Camp. The band Lula Wiles has been together for several years, the three longtime friends having moved from Maine to Boston for study at Berklee College of Music. All three of these highly talented band members write songs, play multiple musical instruments and deliver amazing vocals. The three members of Lula Wiles are Isa Burke, Mali Obomsawin, and Ellie Buckland. (None of them is named Lula.)

The New Moon welcomes The Kennedys, acclaimed duo Pete and Maura Kennedy, who have been together for over twenty years as a band and as a married couple.

Pete and Maura both hail from the East Coast but met in Austin, Texas. For many years they toured with Nanci Griffiths. Their folk rock concerts include original songs as well as interpretations of classics. They have been compared to the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and other legendary folk rock performers, but The Kennedys are completely unique. Chelsea Berry's brand of folk rock expands beyond genre. She is a versatile, talented and hard-working songwriter, singer, guitarist, pianist, and overall consummate musician and performer.

Born and raised in Alaska, she studied classical music and opera at Berklee, she has been writing and performing since she was a teenager. She has toured with Livingston Taylor and opened for well-known folk music greats including Chris Isaack, Vance Gilbert, Cheryl Wheeler, Marshall Crenshaw and Chris Smither.

Chelsea Berry returns to the New Moon for the fourth time since her initial performance in our twenty-fifth season. Whether she is new to you or a familiar face, we look forward to seeing you at the New Moon on October 21.

Marcia (Guntzel) Feldman performs in a wide range of musical styles, from classical to country. She often plays as trio with her husband and son.

Emily Mure

Emily Mure is a singer-songwriter with traditional roots and a contemporary sound. She grew up in New York City and now lives in the Boston area. She fell in love with traditional Irish folk music during a six month stay in Ireland.

She writes songs with deeply personal, poetic lyrics and a country-folk rhythm. In addition to her own songs, she covers classic folk songs masterfully, honoring tradition in her own original style.
